The Bosun’s Locker Stan Hugill Collected Articles 1962 – 1973 Stan Hugill will be remembered as sailor, artist, performer, but above all as England’s last shantyman! He went to sea at 14, was shipwrecked twice and sailed in the last of the square-riggers. His passion for collecting the many shanties and sea-songs he heard first hand, jat the time when the age of sail seemed to be coming to a close was anchored by his years afloat. His books were an inspiration to a whole generation just when the folk scene was flourishing. Stan’s column The Bosun’s Locker ran from 1962-1973 in SPIN magazine, and was the basis of discussions and ideas that later appeared in his books. He died in 1992. The book contains words and tunes to 70 shanties Published Herron Publishing in conjunction with The Chantey Cabin 2006 |
